Why it's important to wash your hair twice in a row with shampoo.
Do you only ever wash your hair with shampoo once? You're definitely not alone.
But… did you know that washing your hair twice can actually make a world of difference to your curls or waves?
It may sound excessive (or even bad for your hair), but we'll explain exactly why double washing works so well , when you should and shouldn't do it, and how to apply it without drying out your hair.
First things first: why shampoo is important at all
Your shampoo does more than just “clean”.
Among other things, it removes:
- dirt and sebum
- sweat
- build-up of stylers
- residues of leave-in, gel and cream
And let's be honest: as a curly woman you often use quite a few products 😉
You can't always completely remove them in one wash.
What happens during the first wash?
The first shampoo is actually a kind of pre-wash .
What it does:
- breaks down the largest layer of dirt and build-up
- cleans superficially
- often foams less (and that's normal!)
👉 Think of it as loosening everything that has been piling up over the past few days (or weeks 😅 ).
And why wash it a second time?
The second shampoo can really do its job.
Those:
- cleanses your scalp thoroughly
- ensures that your pores are clean
- make your shampoo foam better
- prepares your hair to absorb care
And this is important 👇
Clean curls = curls that hydrate better, have more definition and less frizz.
“But won't that dry out my hair?”
Good question, and honest answer:
👉 Not if you use a mild, CG-proof shampoo.
CG shampoos are:
- free from aggressive sulphates
- gentler for your scalp
- intended for regular use
For a mild shampoo the following applies:
Two gentle cleansings are better than one harsh cleansing.
When is it advisable to wash twice?
Double washing is especially a game changer if you:
- used many stylers
- quickly suffer from build-up
- have an oily or itchy scalp
- notice that your curls feel lifeless or heavy
- your hair “doesn't seem to absorb anything anymore”
💡 Tip: Does your hair suddenly feel light and bouncy again after washing? Then you've done it right.
When don't you always have to wash twice?
You don't have to do it every wash day.
Feel free to skip the second wash if:
- your hair hardly contains any product
- you use a co-wash
- your scalp is sensitive or very dry
Here's how to wash your hair the right way twice
- Wet your hair thoroughly
- Apply a small amount of shampoo to your scalp
- Massage gently (not the lengths!)
- Rinse out
- Repeat steps 2 through 4
- Then continue with conditioner & styling
👉 Your lengths will automatically become clean while rinsing.
The result? Curls that are "in" again.
After double washing, many curlies notice:
- more volume at the start
- better definition
- less itching or build-up
- products that work better
And honestly, who wouldn't want that?
