Styling techniques
- Moisture : Is moisture.
- Clumps : Clumps of hair stuck together to form a curl.
- Praying hands : Applying products by rubbing your palms together from top to bottom over your hair.
- Definition : A curl pattern that is clearly visible.
- Diffuser : An interchangeable nozzle for the hair dryer especially for curls that distributes the air over the hair.
- Cast : The hard layer that remains of the gel after your hair has dried.
- Scrunch(en) : Make a bowl with your hands and let your hair fall into it. Then make gentle squeezing movements upwards.
- Used to apply products, but also to squeeze out a cast (scrunching)
- Scrunch out the cast (SOTC) : As described above, a cast is the dried gel that is applied during styling. The cast keeps your curls in shape. When your hair is completely dry, you can scrunch out the cast using your hands or a microfiber cloth (Scrunch out the crunch). You can also do this with a little leave in or oil on your hands. After this, your hair will be soft again.
- Raking : This is detangling/detangling your hair by raking your fingers through your hair. Products can also be applied this way.
For some people, one technique works better than another.
It's a matter of trying it out and seeing what you like and what gives you the most beautiful curls!
Techniques
Squish to condish
This is a technique used to apply conditioner in the shower.
First, wash your hair as usual, bend your head forward and apply and distribute the conditioner through dripping wet hair until it feels nice and slippery.
While rinsing, catch the water with conditioner in your hands and squeeze/scrunch it back into your hair.
Repeat this a few times until your hair no longer drips.
popping
After applying styling products such as leave in, cream, gel/mouse etc., you can blot with a T-shirt or microfibre cloth.
This ensures less frizz and volume.
You place the shirt/cloth on your bed/table, for example, and let your hair fall onto it.
Tying it in a certain way will keep it in place.
Some pop for only 15/20/30 minutes, others for 2 hours or even until dry.
This is also a matter of trying out what is pleasant!
If it is not dry after popping, you can let it air dry or dry it with the diffuser.

Finger coiling
This allows you to make your curls curlier or give them definition or more volume.
You use this technique after you have applied your products to your hair.
Take a section of hair, starting at the top, and twist your hair down around your fingers.
Then knead your hair with an open hand from bottom to top (scrunching)
Roping
This technique ensures that lint disappears.
Divide your hair into two sections.
Apply some product to your hands and grab the two sections from above and squeeze the leave in from top to bottom into your hair.
Then you put the squish de condish.
80/20 gel technique
With this technique, you first use a leave-in and/or cream after your wash routine.
Then you pop for 15/20 minutes.
When you remove the microfiber cloth or T-shirt, gently squeeze any excess water from your hair.
Then you need to dry your hair to 80% wet. You can do this with the diffuser or with a little more patience let it air dry.
Then you apply the gel.
Then you have to dry your hair until it is 20% wet. Again, you can do this in the air or with a diffuser.
Now apply the second layer of gel using the praying hands technique and let it dry until 100% and then scrunch out any cast.
Loc/Lco technology
This technique is more often used by people with thicker hair to keep the hair well hydrated.
It works well because you apply 3 layers, the moisture and two layers to seal in the moisture, which keeps your hair from drying out.
For people with fine hair this may be too heavy and you may want to skip the oil.
L – Leave in (provides moisture and care for your hair)
O – oil (oil ensures that your hair retains moisture and closes the hair cuticles)
C – Cream (or possibly milk, gel or mouse) (provides definition and also has a sealing effect)
With LCO you reverse the last 2. For one the LOC works better and for the other the LCO method.
Plump technique
You wash your hair as normal but leave the conditioner in
With your head bent forward, comb your hair with a wide-toothed comb (combing is not necessary).
Rinse the conditioner out of your hair and let the water form your clumps. You can help it a little with your fingers, but let the water do the work.
This will amount to about 6-8 large clumps.
Gently squeeze some water out of the clumps (they should still be nice and wet). Use the 'praying hands' technique to apply products like leave in or gel. (You can now finger coil the clumps for more definition, do this before the gel).
With a microfiber cloth or T-shirt, you are now going to plop for about 20 minutes (or longer).
Now you need to dry your hair. The best way to do this is with a diffuser, this gives the best volume.
Do not take the clumps apart while wet!
Gently diffuse your hair with your head from one side to the other. As it dries, your curls will naturally fall apart a little.
At 80% to 90% you can very carefully pull your curls apart. Have you done this? Then you continue drying until 100% dry.
If desired, you can now shake your hands over your scalp for some extra volume!
Smasters technique
With this technique you apply your products in sections.
Apply the first part directly after showering to wet hair (leave in/cream)
In the second section, when the hair is 50% dry, apply the gel.
To do this, wet your hands and carefully scrunch the product into your hair and dry it further.

123 gel
After using the leave in/cream, apply 3 gels on top of each other. Do this in the following order:
1- a gel without protein and without glycerine
2- gel with protein and glycerine
3- gel with protein but without glycerine
Apply the gels to soaking wet hair and then plop for about 15 minutes.
After popping, squeeze out excess water from your hair with a T-shirt or microfiber cloth.
You can now let your hair air dry or dry it with a diffuser.
Some also just use 3 gels without taking into account glycerin or protein.
Mouse/Gel/Mouse
First apply mouse then gel and then mouse again on wet hair. After this you can let it air dry or dry with the diffuser.
Double application/ double application
This involves applying products to your hair twice. The first time after showering and the second time after plopping with wet hands.

Bowl method
This is an addition to the squish to condish, only it hydrates even better because less water is used.
For this you will need a large bowl that you fill with warm water.
– first wash your hair as you normally would.
– Distribute conditioner through your hair and detangle it. It should feel slippery.
– Hang your head upside down in the bowl and knead the mixture into your hair and collect it back in the bowl and repeat this a few times.
– Knead the excess water from your hair and style it as usual.
Shingling method
You apply the leave in/cream to wet hair. It should feel a little slippery from this.
You divide your hair into sections.
For each section, take curl by curl and let it slide down through your fingers.
You treat curl by curl and it takes quite some time. But after all this work you will have beautifully defined curls without frizz!

Train your curls
You can train your curls so that your curl is stimulated to curl and you get beautiful clumps.
This is done after you have applied your mask (deep-co) and your hair has been detangled.
You divide your hair into small sections.
Divide that tuft into two parts and twist those two parts around each other.
This way you do all your hair and leave it in while the mask works.
You will need some patience for this technique as it will become more visible after multiple attempts.

Clipping
By attaching clips to the roots on top of your head you can create more volume.
You put them in your hair when it is still wet. You can let your hair dry or dry it with the diffuser. Once it is dry, remove the clips.
