Protection in the summer

Woman with curls on the beach in summer
CG protects your hair in the summer against the sun and chlorinated water in the swimming pool.

Summer is coming, it's getting nice and warm outside again, the sun is shining and we all want to enjoy it of course!
Our hair just doesn't like the sun as much as we do 😉
UV radiation damages our hair and causes loss of keratin (which our hair consists of).
This can make your hair very vulnerable.

Our hair absorbs UV radiation, which causes a certain reaction that can damage the keratin.
Fortunately, we have pigment in our hair, also called melanin.

The melanin (pigment) absorbs and filters the radiation and helps protect your hair against the harmful effects of the sun.
Only it can't stop everything.

Because the melanin actually sacrifices itself, your hair is less well protected afterwards.

So this is why your hair gets lighter from the sun.
So that's actually not good at all.
For those who have light hair, less pigment, this means that the hair gets damaged faster!
It is also true that the sun causes the moisture in your hair to evaporate faster and your hair can dry out.

That's why sun protection is very important!

Tips to protect your hair!

A little hat

A hat! Pretty obvious but it helps!
Hide your hair under a hat and your hair will be protected from the sun.
Also a nice bonus is that your scalp is also protected!

Products with UV protection

You have certain hair products with UV protection.
In addition to protection, this often also provides care. For example, at Douglas you have one for sale; Douglas Brilliant Color UV Protecting Spray.
You can easily spray this into your hair and it is of course CG!

Other products include: Inahsi Define & Shine Volumizing styling foam , Curly Secret Protection UV-Blocker & Umberto Giannini Boho Beach Jelly

Oil

I find this option very interesting!
Did you know that some vegetable oils often already have an SPF factor?!
For example, the Olive Oil came out on top in a study I found on the internet, with an SPF of 7.5.
Following the Coconut Oil with 7.1, Castor Oil with 5.7 and Almond Oil with an SPF of 4.7.

Besides the SPF factor, oil also protects by forming a layer around your hair.
This lasts a long time and won't disappear when your hair gets wet.
So also super nice for when you go swimming!
This also helps against the drying effects of the sun!

Please note : An oil provides protection in a different way than sunscreen.
So don't rub it all over your body because you'll just burn!

Leave-in / conditioner

A leave-in conditioner can also help by preventing dehydration.
It contains moisturizing ingredients.
So you can apply some leave-in before you go out.
Don't have a leave-in?
For example, you could mix some regular conditioner with water in a spray bottle and spray it over your hair!

Her hair tied

To ensure that not all of your hair is exposed to the sun, you can make a bun.
This will at least help protect some of your hair!

Tips for swimming

When you go swimming, it is better to go for a longer swim once or twice than to go into the water 10 times and get your hair wet.
But when the weather is nice or you're on holiday, there's a good chance that you will!

Water droplets increase the burning effect on your skin but also on your hair.

You could put your hair in a bun so that maybe only the bottom of your hair gets a little wet.
If your hair is completely wet, it can help to wrap your hair in a cloth while it dries or to place a cloth over your hair while sunbathing.

Outside of the sun, chlorinated water is also not really good for our hair.
To do this, before you get into the pool (if you plan on getting your hair wet), you could first wet your hair completely in the shower.
Your hair will absorb the moisture and will be saturated, meaning it will absorb the chlorine water less quickly!

If you wet your hair in the shower you could also apply a little mask/deepco or conditioner and put your hair in a braid or bun.
This helps to protect and nourish your hair at the same time.

And then we also have the swimming cap.. Well, that speaks for itself I think! 😉

Mask

After sunbathing or swimming, your hair will probably enjoy a nourishing mask regularly.
Just do this to give your hair a boost!

Drink enough!

Of course, it is also very important to drink enough.
Good for your body but also so that your hair is hydrated from within!
