How to Create a Moisture-Boosting Routine for Dry Curls (Fall Edition)

Cold air outside and dry air inside cause your curls to dry out faster in the fall. The solution? A moisture-boosting routine that nourishes and protects your hair from the inside out. In this blog post, you'll learn exactly how to get your CG routine fall-ready, with products and tips that really work for dry and frizzy hair.

Why do curls need extra care in autumn?

Autumn brings colder temperatures, wind, and dry heating air. And that's not exactly fun for curls.

Step 1: Gently cleanse

Sulfates strip your hair of its natural oils, which is exactly what you don't want in the fall. So choose a mild shampoo.

💡 Tip: Don't wash your hair too often. Once or twice a week is usually enough.

Step 2: Deeply hydrate with a hair mask

A good CG hair mask is your best friend this season. Choose masks with moisture-rich ingredients like:

  • Aloe vera

  • Glycerin

  • Shea butter or avocado oil

Use the mask once a week after washing. Leave it on for 20-30 minutes under a shower cap or heated hood for extra effectiveness.

Step 3: Product layering, the LOC or LCO method

Hydrating your curls is one thing, but locking that moisture in is just as important. Layer your CG products correctly. After washing, start with a hydrating leave-in conditioner. Follow with a rich cream or butter to lock in moisture. Finish with a light oil to seal the hair and prevent frizz. This is the so-called LOC or LCO method.

  • LOC = Leave-in, Oil, Cream

  • LCO = Leave-in, Cream, Oil

Which order suits you?

  • Wavy/fine hair: Try LCO with a light leave-in and a light oil. Alternatively, use a gel instead of the cream.

  • Curly/medium hair: LOC or LCO – experiment!

  • Coily/thick hair: LOC with a rich butter like cream often works well.

Step 4: Refresh between washes

Your curls won't stay frizz-free on their own. Between washes, you can refresh them with a hydrating spray to revitalize your curls without drying them out.

Here's how to do it:

  • Lightly dampen your curls with, for example, a spray/mist.

  • Scrunch with your hands

  • If necessary, apply a little gel or mousse to reseal.

Bonus: Protect your hair at night

Cotton = friction = fluff.
Satin = smooth & moisture retention.

  • Use a satin pillowcase

  • Or go for a satin bonnet
