How do I determine my hair properties?
Now you will determine what your hair properties are and which products will ultimately suit it.
Porosity
Porosity has to do with the hair cuticles and the absorption and retention of moisture.
The difference in porosity can be related to, for example, your genes, hair color and use of straighteners/curling irons.
Here's an example of the differences under the microscope!
Low/medium porosity
In low/medium porosity hair, the hair cuticles lie flat/close together.
This makes it difficult for moisture to enter the hair and also difficult for it to leave the hair.
Naturally your hair grows in a low porosity so we can say that this hair is not damaged but healthy. Medium porosity hair is between low and high porosity hair.
Have you not dyed your hair recently (all your hair max 2-4 weeks ago) or bleached it (max 6-8 weeks ago) and do you not use a curling and/or straightening iron for your hair? Then you can assume a low/medium porosity.
Characteristics of low and medium porosity are:
– The hair shines.
– You may experience build-up more quickly.
Tips for low and medium porosity:
– Use light products with not too many oils (If you use oil, use a light oil and a small amount)
– Apply the products to wet hair and not to dry hair to keep your hair well hydrated.
– Small proteins are suitable for low and medium porosity but not too much.
- A heat cap ensures that your hair cuticles open up a little more, allowing your mask to be absorbed better and penetrate deeper into your hair.
High porosity
With highly porous hair, moisture easily enters the hair, but it can also easily leave again.
This is because the hair cuticles are raised and open.
High porosity hair is damaged hair.
Have you recently dyed your hair (all your hair max 2-4 weeks ago) or bleached it (max 6-8 weeks ago) or do you regularly use a curling and/or straightening iron for your hair? Then you can assume a high porosity.
Characteristics of high porosity:
– Your hair often needs a lot of product and seems to eat it up.
– Can fluff
– Quick tangles
– It can also feel dry and break easily.
– Do you dye/bleach your hair or use a lot of heat on your hair? Then you can assume a high porosity.
*High porosity is also common in people with fine hair.
There is a thinner scale layer, which means that minor damage can become harmful more quickly.
Tips for high porosity:
– Use good care products (especially a good mask)
– Stop or reduce dyeing your hair or care for your hair afterwards, for example with Olaplex 3 or Curlsmith Bond Rehab Salve and a good mask with high protein.
– Can often work better with thicker creams to properly hydrate the hair.
– High porosity needs protein because this porosity has a shortage of it.
– Large proteins are suitable for high porosity.
It is best to use the large protein in your mask and leave-in.
Her thickness
The thickness of your hair can be classified as fine, medium or coarse.
- When you take your hair between your fingers and roll it, do you hardly feel your hair? Then you have fine hair .
- If you can feel the hair very clearly, then you have coarse hairFor fine hair, it is best to use lightweight products. This is also possible for medium and thick hair. Try out what works better, light products or something heavier.
Her type
In terms of hair types, there are many different hair types!
From straight to curly hair. Often hair from curl type 3 can handle heavier products.
Now that you know what your hair properties are, it might be best to write them down.

Do you have low/medium porosity?
- Shampoo & Conditioner does not matter if it is with or without protein.
- Use a mask with a little protein.
- Leave-in can be with little protein or without protein
- Gel doesn't matter either.
Do you have high porosity?
- Shampoo & conditioner does not matter if it is with or without protein.
- Use a mask with high protein.
- Use a Leave-in with high protein.
- Gel does not matter whether it contains protein or not.
Want to know more about protein (large, small) and how long your hair is highly porous for example? Read the blog about protein HERE . This is recommended :)
The filter allows you to easily filter on the products you are looking for. For example, a 'mask' with 'large protein'. Or a 'leave-in' that is 'lightweight'. It's all possible!
Then read the message Products & Routine .
