Ingredients to avoid

What ingredients should I avoid when starting the CG Method and why?

To avoid

Are you curious about why you should avoid certain ingredients when following the CG method?
Then read on! We will briefly explain what the ingredients do for your hair and scalp and why you should avoid them.

Sulfates

A sulfate seems like a very nice ingredient. It ensures that your shampoo foams nicely. The foam gives you a clean feeling, right? Unfortunately, sulfates are not friends to your hair. They are such strong cleansers that they also remove sebum from your scalp. Your scalp then receives a signal that sebum needs to be produced. In the long run, sulfates only give you a greasy scalp.

How do you recognize sulfates? Look for: Sulfate, Sulfonate

Please note: methosulfate looks like a sulfate, but it is not!

With the sulphates we also know a doubtful case, namely: Sodium c14-18 olefin sulfonate. You can best place this ingredient between a final wash and a cleansing shampoo. One curly girl uses products with this ingredient, the other prefers to avoid it. It is up to you what you want. If this ingredient is present in one of our products, it will be stated in the description.

Alcohol

Some types of alcohol are known to have a drying effect on your hair.
This causes unhealthy, frizzy hair and of course we don't want that.
There are also types of alcohol that you can continue to use. These are usually derived from fat and therefore do not have a drying effect.

Safe alcohol: Benzyl alcohol, Cet(aer)yl alcohol, Lanolin alcohol and Stearyl alcohol.

Unsafe alcohol (and therefore drying): Alcohol, Alcohol Denat, Ethanol, (Iso)propanol.

Mineral Oils & Wax

These ingredients create a layer around your hair and completely seal it.
This prevents moisture from reaching your hair, causing it to dry out.
These ingredients cannot be removed even with water or a mild cleanser, so it is best to avoid them.

Please note: there is also CG proof wax. However, this does not contain real wax and you can therefore use it with confidence.

How do you recognize these ingredients? Look for the following names in the ingredients list: Lanolin oil, Mineral oil, Paraffin, Petrolatum and Wax.

Silicone

Silicones work much the same as mineral oils and wax.
They form a layer around your hair, which can dry it out.
Some silicones are soluble in water and can be used. Others are not soluble in water and should be avoided.

Does an ingredient end in : -cone, -conol, -silicate or -xane? Then you better avoid it!

Please note: Does the ingredient say PPG or PEG? Then it is water-soluble. So you can use it with confidence.
