What is build-up within the CG method?
As you know by now, you smear quite a few different products in your hair. A shampoo, conditioner, mask, leave-in, gel, mousse etc. Despite the fact that you avoid bad ingredients, such as silicones, certain ingredients can still build up on your hair and/or scalp. This is called build-up. How do you recognize build-up? How do you get rid of build-up? We are happy to explain that to you in this blog!
What is build-up?
Build-up occurs when residues remain on the hair and/or scalp. This can be product residues but also, for example, lime that remains after washing your hair. This layer continues to build up and ensures that the hair is closed off and that no more care products can be absorbed.
What are the signs of build-up?
There are several signs that you can recognize build-up. Of course, you don't have to suffer from all of these points, but if you recognize a number of them, there is a chance that you may be dealing with build-up.
๐๐ผ Your hair feels limp and lifeless
๐๐ผ Lots of fluff
๐๐ผExperiences itchy scalp
๐๐ผ You have an oily scalp
๐๐ผ Little or no cast in your hair
๐๐ผ More tangles than normal
๐๐ผ Dull hair / it no longer shines
๐๐ผ Products no longer work
๐๐ผ Can no longer be modeled properly
๐๐ผ Curls fall out quickly
Who is more likely to experience build-up?
Some people are more likely to suffer from it than others. However, build-up occurs more quickly in fine and thin hair and in curl types 1 and 2 than in other hair types. Of course, other hair and curl types are not excluded from build-up. Do you use a lot of products in a routine? Or do you wash your hair little? Then too, build-up can occur more quickly.
Why is it important to remove build-up?
As mentioned before, your hair is closed off and can no longer absorb any or hardly any products. You can no longer optimally care for your hair and your hair no longer gives the desired result. It is limp, lifeless, dull and can even cause hair loss.
How do I get rid of build-up?
Have you discovered that it could be build-up that you are suffering from? Nothing to be ashamed of, this can happen to anyone! This is what you can do about it:
๐๐ผ Use a final wash shampoo : yes, the shampoo you use before starting the CG (curly girl) Method. This shampoo resets your hair and thoroughly cleanses your hair and scalp. Can you use a final wash shampoo within the CG method? Yes you can. Especially in this case. You just shouldn't use this shampoo too often because it dries out your hair.
TIP : After your final wash shampoo, use a nice mask that suits your hair properties to care for your hair so that it does not dry out.
๐๐ผ Use a clarifying shampoo : these shampoos also clean your hair well. It contains stronger cleansers than a 'normal' CG shampoo. Just like with a final wash shampoo; don't use it too often and after use it is best to use a mask to take good care of your hair against drying out.
Tips to prevent build-up:
There are a number of things you can do to prevent build-up as much as possible.
๐๐ผ Do you have hair type 1-2 and/or fine/thin hair? And do you quickly suffer from build-up / product build-up? Then you could use a clarifying shampoo once a month to prevent build-up.
๐๐ผ Use a water filter on your shower head to prevent limescale. It is possible that 'hard' water comes out of the tap in your area. Limescale can cause build-up because it forms a layer around your hair. A water filter can prevent this.
๐๐ผ Use the right products that suit your hair type AND in the right way . For example, do you have fine hair and do you use heavy products? Then you better look for lighter products. Use a conditioner as a leave-in? Don't do it. A conditioner is made to be rinsed out and not to be left in your hair. Read the instructions for use of the products and use them correctly. Do you not know what your hair properties are and which products suit it? Then read this blog: Determining hair properties .
๐๐ผ Wash your hair regularly . You sometimes read that you should wash your hair as little as possible within the cg method. This is not true. Your scalp does not like this either. Washing your hair 2/3 times a week is recommended. If necessary, use a massage brush to clean your scalp properly while washing.
